The «focussed practice» is increasingly common among health professionals. For example, about 50% of Canadian general practitioners had a «focussed practice» (e.g.: Aging or Pregnancy) in 2007, up from about 61.8% in 2013. Some authors predict that generalists will be increasingly scarce over the next few years (Pluye, Grad and Barlow, 2016).

The increasing popularity of telehealth allows the professional to be linked to a certain category of consultation request and greatly improve his exposure to this condition, which supports the development of expertise. To further differentiate themselves, a healthcare professional can prioritize a certain category of question, and even make his team a "center of excellence" in a certain category of consultation requests.

Studies show that this type of practice increases patient satisfaction, improves clinical outcomes and even lowers health costs.
